Sliding door roller replacement in St. Augustine.
If your sliding glass door has turned heavy, drags across the floor, or grinds as it moves, the rollers underneath have almost certainly worn out. We replace them with heavy-duty rollers and get the door floating again โ usually in a single visit.
Symptoms of worn sliding door rollers
- The door feels heavy โ you brace and pull instead of gliding it with one hand.
- Dragging or scraping along the bottom track, sometimes leaving a scratched line.
- Grinding or crunching as the wheels ride on damaged bearings and grit.
- The door tips or sits unevenly in the frame, with an uneven gap at the top.
- It jumps or falls off the track โ worn rollers let the panel drop out of the channel.
What causes rollers to fail here
Every sliding door rides on two roller assemblies. They're designed to last many years โ but Northeast Florida is hard on them:
- Salt air corrodes the steel bearings and axles, especially near the beaches.
- Sand and grit pack into the wheels and act like grinding paste.
- Humidity keeps everything damp, accelerating rust.
- Weight and use โ large, frequently-used panels wear faster, and a single flat spot quickly gets worse.
How we inspect the door
We start by testing the slide and watching where it binds. We check the roller height adjustment screws, look at the track condition, and where needed lift the panel to see the rollers directly. This tells us whether you need a straightforward roller swap, an adjustment, or roller replacement combined with track cleaning or repair.
The roller replacement process
- We protect the floor and, using suction lifts and proper technique, remove the panel safely.
- The old roller assemblies come out and we match them to heavy-duty replacements from the truck.
- We clean the track channel so the new wheels ride clean.
- The panel goes back in, rollers are height-adjusted so the door hangs square and locks line up.
- You test the slide and the lock before we finish.
Repair options
Not every heavy door needs new rollers. Sometimes the rollers are fine but out of adjustment, or the track needs cleaning. When rollers are genuinely worn, we use durable tandem or single assemblies suited to the panel weight. If you're on or near the coast, heavier-duty stainless-style rollers are worth it โ they resist the salt-air corrosion that shortened the life of the originals.
Repair or replace the door?
Replacing rollers is a fraction of the cost of a new door, and it solves the "heavy door" problem in the vast majority of cases. A full door replacement only makes sense when the frame or glass is failing too. If we think replacement is genuinely the better value, we'll tell you โ but for a hard-to-slide door, it almost never is. See our guide on repair vs. replace.
What affects the cost
We don't quote a flat price sight-unseen because a few things move it: the number of panels, the roller type the door takes, how corroded the existing hardware is, whether the track also needs cleaning or reshaping, and access to the door. You get a clear estimate before any work starts. Call 904-479-6747 for a free estimate.
How long it takes
Many single-door roller replacements are done within about an hour. Multi-panel doors, seized hardware, or a track that needs work first can add time โ we give you a realistic window up front.
Safety note
Sliding glass panels commonly weigh 80โ200 lbs. Removing one without the right lifting tools risks a warped frame, a dropped panel, or shattered glass. If your door is already off the track, please leave it and call rather than forcing it.
