How to tell if a sliding door track is damaged.

Rollers and tracks fail differently. Knowing which you're looking at points straight to the fix.

Short answer: A damaged track usually causes catching or grinding at a specific spot (not the whole slide), a visibly bent or wavy lip, pitting or rust, water that pools instead of draining, and new rollers that wear out fast. Even, all-the-way heaviness points to rollers instead.

Signs of track damage

  • Catching or grinding at one point along the slide, not evenly.
  • A visibly bent, dented, or wavy track lip.
  • Pitting, rust, or a rough, flaking surface.
  • Water pooling in the channel that won't drain.
  • Brand-new rollers that wear out unusually fast.

Track vs. roller problems

If the door is heavy the whole way, suspect rollers. If it catches at a specific spot or you can see damage in the channel, suspect the track. Often it's both — a worn roller drops the panel, which then scores the track.

How to check it

Vacuum the track and wipe it clean, then run a finger (carefully) along the channel to feel for burrs, pitting, or a bent lip. Look for a bright scratch line where the panel has been dragging. Shine a light along the length to spot waviness.

What the fix looks like

Depending on severity: clean and reshape, install a stainless track cap, or replace the track section. Minor bends can be reshaped; corroded-through tracks are replaced.

FAQs

Questions homeowners ask first.

Yes — running new rollers on a pitted or bent track wears them out quickly, which is why we address the track at the same time.
No — minor bends can be reshaped, and a stainless cap can cover a worn surface. Full replacement is for severe damage.
Track damage tends to cause trouble at one spot; worn rollers make the whole door heavy. We check both.
