Why does my sliding door grind or scrape?

That grinding sound is metal telling you something's wrong underneath. Usually it's one of three things.

Short answer: Grinding or scraping comes from worn rollers dragging, a track packed with sand and grit, or a damaged track surface — often a mix. Cleaning the track may help; if the noise continues, the rollers or track need service.

The three usual causes

  1. Worn rollers — seized or flat-spotted wheels drag and grind along the track.
  2. Debris in the track — packed sand and grit act like sandpaper under the wheels.
  3. A damaged track — a pitted or bent surface makes the rollers stutter and scrape.

Telling them apart

Grinding the whole way usually means rollers. Grinding at one spot points to track damage. If it improves after cleaning, debris was part of it.

What to try first

Vacuum and wipe the track thoroughly — no heavy grease, which traps grit. If the grinding is gone, you're done. If it returns quickly, the rollers or track need attention. See how to clean a track properly.

Why you shouldn't ignore it

Grinding means the panel isn't rolling cleanly. Keep using it and the wheels wear faster and the track scores deeper — turning a small fix into a bigger one, and eventually a panel that jumps the track.

FAQs

Questions homeowners ask first.

Sometimes briefly, but on worn rollers or a pitted track it just traps grit and returns. It's not a real fix.
Yes — it accelerates wear on both the rollers and the track, so it's worth addressing early.
Cleaning the track is safe to try. If it persists, roller or track service is needed and the heavy panel is best left to a pro.
