How to clean a sliding door track correctly.

Done right, this five-minute job prevents a surprising share of the repairs we get called for.

Short answer: Vacuum the track, scrub the channel with a stiff brush and a mild cleaner, wipe it dry, and finish with a dry lubricant โ€” never thick grease, which traps sand. Do this every few months in coastal Florida to keep grit from grinding down rollers and track.

Step by step

  1. Vacuum loose sand and debris from the channel.
  2. Scrub the track with a stiff brush (an old toothbrush for corners) and warm water with a little dish soap or a vinegar solution.
  3. Rinse and wipe fully dry so no grit stays behind.
  4. Clear the weep holes at the track ends so water drains.
  5. Apply a dry lubricant (silicone or PTFE), not oil or grease.

What to avoid

  • Thick grease or oil โ€” it collects sand and turns into grinding paste.
  • Harsh metal tools that scratch the track surface.
  • Skipping the weep holes โ€” blocked drainage causes corrosion.

Why it matters in Florida

Sand and salt are the two things that destroy sliding-door hardware here. Regular cleaning removes the abrasive before it wears down your rollers and pits the track โ€” see track corrosion in Florida.

If it still doesn't glide

If the door is clean but still heavy or grinding, the rollers are likely worn โ€” cleaning can't fix a failed bearing. That's a roller replacement.
