A snapped handle is annoying and can lock you out of your own patio. Here's how to handle it safely.

Why handles break
Handles take daily pulling force and years of Florida sun, which makes plastic and pot-metal handles brittle. They often crack at the mounting screws or snap where the handle meets the lock spindle. Sometimes the underlying mortise lock seized, and the handle broke fighting it.
What to do right now
- Stop forcing the door — a broken handle can jam the lock if muscled.
- Secure the door another way (track bar) until it's repaired.
- If you can, note the door manufacturer and handle style for a closer match.
Repair vs. replacement
The handle set is replaced — and since handles connect to the mortise lock, we check the lock at the same time, because a seized lock is a common reason a handle broke in the first place.
Matching the hardware
We carry a range of interior/exterior handle sets and match style and fit as closely as possible. On older doors an exact match isn't always available, but function and appearance are restored.
