Why won't my sliding glass door lock?

A door that won't lock is a security problem hiding as a nuisance. The cause is usually one of three things.

Short answer: A sliding glass door usually won't lock because the mortise lock mechanism is worn or corroded, the lock has fallen out of alignment with its keeper, or the panel has dropped on worn rollers so the hook no longer meets the strike. All three are fixable.

The three usual causes

  1. Worn or corroded mortise lock: the internal hook-and-spring mechanism has failed.
  2. Misaligned keeper: the strike the lock catches has shifted or bent.
  3. Dropped panel: worn rollers let the door sag, so the lock no longer lines up.

Quick checks

Lift the door slightly by the handle and try the lock — if it catches when you lift, the panel has dropped and the rollers are the real issue. If the mechanism feels gritty or won't move, the lock itself is worn. If it turns but misses the slot, the keeper is misaligned.

How each is fixed

A misaligned keeper is adjusted; a worn mechanism is replaced; a dropped panel is corrected with roller service or height adjustment. See lock repair vs. replacement.

Don't leave it

A slider that won't lock is an easy entry point. If you can't secure it, a temporary bar in the track helps until it's repaired — and consider upgrading the security while it's being fixed.

FAQs

Questions homeowners ask first.

The panel has dropped on worn rollers, so the lock lines up only when you raise it. Fixing the rollers restores normal locking.
If it's just misaligned, it's adjusted. A worn or corroded mechanism is replaced — an inexpensive job.
It's a security concern, especially on ground floors and rentals. We prioritize these and answer 24/7.
