Before you replace a lock, it's worth knowing the lock often isn't the thing that's broken.

Short answer: If the lock is simply misaligned — often because the panel dropped on worn rollers — an adjustment fixes it. If the mortise mechanism is worn or corroded, it's replaced. Replacement is inexpensive; the key is diagnosing whether it's the lock or the door's alignment.
Is it the lock or the door?
Test by lifting the handle slightly and locking. If it catches when lifted, the panel has sagged and the rollers are the real problem, not the lock. If the mechanism is gritty, stiff, or won't throw, the lock itself needs replacing.
When repair (adjustment) works
- The keeper (strike) is slightly out of position and can be realigned.
- The panel dropped and correcting roller height re-aligns the lock.
